Santos manager Cuca has heaped praise on Neymar following a standout performance in the team’s 2-0 victory over Red Bull Bragantino at Vila Belmiro, just days before Carlo Ancelotti is set to announce his final World Cup squad on May 18.
“Neymar played a great game. He held up the ball, created chances, and delivered brilliant moments that set up goals for his teammates. He scored a stunning goal, played an indirect part in the second, and had an excellent overall contribution,” Cuca said in the post-match press conference.
The number 10 has two more matches to impress the Italian coach before the deadline. Santos faces Coritiba in the Copa do Brasil on Wednesday, followed by another clash with the same side in the Brazilian Serie A over the weekend.
With limited time to make his case for a spot in the squad, Neymar emphasized the importance of both the win and his goal. “I’m happy with the goal, happy to help the team, and most importantly to get the victory—that’s what matters most. We hadn’t won in a while, so we absolutely couldn’t let this one slip. I’m pleased with the three points,” he said.
Santos has a crucial midweek fixture in Curitiba, needing a positive result to advance in the Copa do Brasil after a goalless draw in the first leg at home. “We have the ability to win away. It will be a tough game, but we’ll prepare well for Wednesday,” Neymar added.
The forward dedicated the victory to his mother Nadine, who was watching from the stands. He gave her a kiss and a hug during the halftime break, presenting her with a small gift on the pitch.
